Did you know?

Cyril Whiting was the third generation of the Whiting family to be appointed the professional at Royal St George’s.

Born in 1924, he had worked in his father’s shop since 1939, and apart from a spell of service in the Army in the North Staffordshire and Worcestershire Regiments during the war, lived his life in Sandwich.

He was a skillful player, club maker, and teacher.  As a young professional he won the Kent Professional Championships at Prince’s in 1959, and the Kent Open Championship at Royal Cinque Ports in 1965, a feat never achieved by his father.

His teaching was renowned for his ability to keep the game simple, and his club making skills learned in the days of hickory shafts, allowed him to shape persimmon woods to steel shafts, to suit members requirements.  He was ably supported in the shop by his wife Joan, who knitted wood covers in club colors to member’s orders.

Immortalized by Ian Fleming, with whom he played frequently, as ‘Cyril Blacking’ in James Bond’s famous match against Goldfinger at Royal St Mark’s,  Cyril retired in 1988 and was elected an Honorary Member in 1989.  He still lives in Sandwich.
